NEWS
As global coffee consumption continues to grow, the coffee industry's demand for environmentally friendly packaging is becoming increasingly urgent.
In recent years, the waste caused by traditional coffee bean packaging has attracted much attention. Industry experts are calling on roasters to do more to
reduce packaging waste, and sustainable packaging supplier OEMY Packaging is helping companies achieve this goal through innovative solutions.
The problem of coffee packaging waste is serious
Coffee beans are usually packaged in multiple layers to ensure freshness during transportation and storage, but most traditional materials are difficult to recycle or degrade.
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of tons of waste are generated worldwide each year due to green coffee bean packaging, of which plastic liners and composite
fiber bags are the main sources of pollution. As consumers become more environmentally conscious, roasters are under pressure to reduce their carbon footprint.
OEMY Packaging’s Sustainable Alternative
To address this challenge, OEMY Packaging has launched a series of environmentally friendly packaging products designed specifically for coffee beans,
taking into account functionality and sustainability:
Outer material: Plant-based films (such as PLA polylactic acid or PBAT) are used, which are derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane and
can be completely decomposed into water, carbon dioxide and organic matter in an industrial composting environment. It has similar strength and barrier properties
to traditional plastics, effectively preventing moisture and oxidation, and protecting the freshness of coffee beans.
Degradable zipper closure: Innovative bio-based zipper system made of modified PLA, with excellent sealing performance and degradability, avoiding the pollution
problems of traditional plastic zippers.
Compostable one-way air valve: Allows coffee beans to vent naturally while blocking external oxygen, and the degradation cycle is synchronized with the packaging bag,
leaving no residual microplastics.
The coffee industry needs to reduce packaging waste from the source. OEMY Packaging’s solutions not only comply with EU and North American environmental
regulations, but also help brands enhance their green image and meet consumers’ expectations for sustainable products.
Industry calls for collective action
Some leading bakers have begun to adopt environmentally friendly packaging, but the penetration rate still needs to be improved. Expert advice:
Supply chain collaboration: Bakers and suppliers at the origin jointly invest in sustainable packaging systems.
Consumer education: Use labels to explain how to recycle or degrade packaging to increase terminal participation.
